Sweetwater Community Mural Project
promoting peace though art and communication
creating a mandala for National City

It is the hope of the Sweetwater Zen Center to create a series of “Mandala” murals with the help of friends and neighbors of the surrounding community. The mural will be series of four created seasonally. The first mural took place on Saturday, October 11, 2008 on the wall of the Samahan Clinic on Highland Avenue. This second mural took place on February 28, 2009 on the SWZC wall near the bus stop on Highland Avenue.

The next mural will be Saturday June 6th from 12-5. This time we are going to create a SCULPTURE out of recycled papers, magazines, woods, wires, etc.

The theme and the vision for this mural will be created through the process of council on Thursday, June 4, 2009 from 7 - 8:30 pm.

The day is going to be super fun for all ages and talents, creating a community sculpture together. Please bring your inspirations, creativity and any papers, letters, magazines, etc. that you wish to recycle into art!

The word Mandala can be defined as a “circular container of essence”. What is the essence of our community?  The Mandala may be painted as any image that we create. It will represent a map of what we believe to be the “essence” of our community here in National City. All are invited to participate! Help us create a Mandala that will represent our neighborhood.

Creating a group mandala is a unifying experience in which people can express themselves individually within a unified structure. Each New Year the Sweetwater Zen Center creates a Sand Mandala to remind us of our connection to each other, the community and the world as a whole.
